MatureFreeAndSingle.com is an online dating site geared towards dating and friendship for the over-40s. It was created by a couple who met online themselves and saw various ways in which online dating could be improved. Have they succeeded? Sadly, the site’s features still don’t quite match our top sites, so there’s still a way to go.
You might also need to be a little cautious about how much money you have in your bank account if you decide to pay for the service, as some members have reported that their whole payment was taken at once.
With thousands of profiles to browse, you can tell that MatureFreeAndSingle.com is a site that’s on the up. At the time of this review there were almost 1000 members online, which is fairly impressive for a specialized dating website such as this. Drop by earlier or at the weekend and you’ll find thousands online.
The site caters mostly to British mature singles so if you’re in the UK and looking to get meeting new people it’s well worth checking out. It is perhaps less useful if you live outside of the UK, unless of course you’re looking to move or have a date come visit you from the isles.
The profiles are adequately detailed, including details on hobbies and interests. You do get the important stuff, such as location/distance, last login (to help you screen out fake or inactive profiles) and self-written sections that give a pretty good insight to that person. You’ll also find features that will gage your compatibility by your respective romantic personality or zodiac traits (upgrade required).
The majority of profiles have photos and these are generally of a decent resolution and can be enlarged, even by standard members. Any poor quality shots are more likely due to the skill of the photographer, and you will find a fair few of them.
There are several ways to get in touch, all of which can be performed on a member’s profile page. It’s possible to send an email, ‘wink’ (send an automated icebreaker expressing your interest), add that member to your favorites list or even click on a tab and ‘request to meet’, for those who don’t want to beat around the bush. You can also request to chat with a member online using the IM or video chat feature rather than waiting around for emails. It’s also possible to create a favorites list.
An especially useful feature is ‘Who’s Near Me?’, which displays member locations on a map, allowing you to easily see members in your vicinity (upgrade needed). You can also contact members directly via the map and filter members by age.
If you’re not so hung up on distance, the ‘Encounters’ feature displays profile photos and you decide whether you’d like to meet on the strength of these (by clicking yes/maybe/no). If the feeling’s mutual then the two of you are a match. We also liked the diary section, which is a space where people can write about their lives and thoughts, sharing it all with the community.
A search feature is at your disposal to help make browsing more efficient. The quick search lets you specify a limited range of criteria (age range, location/distance), filter your results (has a photo, online now) and sort your results (latest joined, name, age, last online, newest videos, newest photos).
There’s also a range of tab searches if you’re not so patient, including online now, ‘recommended members’ (the more you use the site the more likely you’ll be recommended), latest members, latest videos and latest photos.
To keep tabs when you’re on the move you can register for SMS services that you can browse on your mobile device and alert you when you receive messages or when your profile is viewed.
It’s worth considering upgrading because free members cannot read or send messages to other members, chat online using IM, use features such as ‘Who’s Near Me?’, get enhanced features such as checking who’s checked out your profile and more.
Basically, you won’t get much out of the site with free membership. Sign up for a longer term subscription and you could make a saving (see above). If you have any questions or problems there’s reliable telephone support in the UK (9.00am-5.30pm GMT) and email support.
Sadly the site is let down by an inadequate search function and a fairly strong number of inactive profiles. However, there are certainly a number of satisfied customers, but we do think you ought to check out all the terms and conditions before entering your credit card details since a few members have been irritated that their membership fees came out in one lump sum rather than month-by-month.
MatureFreeAndSingle.com is potentially a useful dating site for mature UK singles and there are a couple of extra features to get you meeting members you like. Whilst it doesn’t quite pack the same punch as our top sites in terms of membership numbers, it’s certainly worth a look, particularly if you’re in the UK and looking for a more mature date.
